Injection molds and molding machines — what are they?
Injection molds are equipment used for many years in various industries, as they significantly improve the process of shaping metals, plastics, or rubber.
An injection mold is a tool that, during the production process, is filled with a molten material, enabling the permanent formation of a pre-designed shape.
Individual injection molds can differ significantly from each other, usually in terms of operating pressure and temperature, as well as the time required to complete the process (producing the desired shape). The work with such molds is divided into several stages — first, the selected material is heated and liquefied, then injected, followed by cooling, and finally, the tool is emptied.
Injection molds are mainly used in:
- Construction industry,
- Machinery industry,
- Automotive industry,
- Electronics and electrotechnical industry,
- Medical industry,
- Food industry, and more.
Types of injection molds and their applications
Injection molds are usually classified based on the type of gating system or the number of molding cavities in the device. The design may be based on a larger number of cavities or just one. There are also devices with one or two parting planes.
Due to their diversity, specific injection molds are used for producing both simple and complex, demanding products. With this tool, both mass and single-unit production can be carried out, handling straightforward projects as well as those requiring a higher level of quality.
We can also distinguish between cold-runner and hot-runner molds. The implementation of these two systems entirely determines the working method, as they differ in electrical energy requirements and, depending on the type, the number of operators needed for their operation.
