Location and general information about Bielsko-Biała
Bielsko-Biała is a city with county rights in the Silesian Voivodeship, in southern Poland. It lies on the Biała River, in the Silesian Foothills region, at the foot of the Silesian and Little Beskids. It was formed from the merger of Bielsko and Biała in 1951. At that time, it had 60,000 residents. Later incorporation of neighboring towns and industrial development led to a rapid population increase.
It is the main center of the Bielsko Industrial District and the core city of the Bielsko agglomeration. The city is divided into 30 neighborhoods. A major transportation and railway hub, it is also a tourist destination due to its mountain proximity and historic sites. The city itself is home to six mountain peaks. It is an economic, administrative, cultural, and academic center for the Silesian-Malopolska borderland, often referred to as Podbeskidzie. It serves as a key commercial-service and industrial center. While textile industry was once dominant, the automotive sector now plays a vital role in the local economy.
Bielsko-Biała covers 124.51 km², ranking 19th in Poland in terms of area. According to Statistics Poland (GUS), as of December 2021, the city had a population of 168,319, making it the 22nd largest city in the country by population.
