Intermodal Transport – Why Is It Important?

Transport is a key sector driving the growth of the national economy. It is constantly evolving, introducing improvements through new technologies, innovative systems, and solutions that help goods travel faster and more efficiently. Minimizing environmental impact is equally important – and this is where intermodal transport excels. More and more companies are requesting combined freight services, largely thanks to the modernization and expansion of road and rail infrastructure. Modern methods also enhance the safety of transported goods.
Our Clients in Poland and abroad greatly value the ability to use intermodal freight. This type of transport has seen a significant rise in popularity recently, thanks to the many advantages it offers – which we outline below.
What Is Intermodal Transport?
It is an efficient method of transporting goods and materials that combines more than one mode of transport. A single provider is responsible for managing the entire process and issuing one contract covering the complete delivery. This means that a single shipment on the same route can be transported, for example, by truck, train, and ship.
It is important to distinguish between intermodal and multimodal transport. These terms are often used interchangeably, but they are different. In intermodal transport, the cargo maintains the same parameters (weight, dimensions) from the loading point to the final unloading point, without changes. In multimodal transport, reloading and additional loading may occur during the journey.
Intermodal freight is most often carried out using containers or intermodal trailers. The latter are equipped with special fittings, allowing them to be easily transferred from a truck to a freight train wagon.
Containers are typically made of steel and come in various types. The most common is the standardized 20-foot container, which enables easy transport across Poland and worldwide by truck, train, or ship.
The most common types of intermodal transport include:
♦ Rail-road transport,
♦ Land-sea transport,
♦ Land-ferry transport.
Advantages of Intermodal Transport
There are many benefits to using this method of transport, including:
1. In some cases, regulations allow exceeding the GVW (gross vehicle weight) limits for trucks – for example, when the direct distance to the nearest terminal does not exceed 150 km. This enables better delivery planning and optimization. Increasing the weight limit to 44 t simplifies the entire process.
2. Growing popularity drives the construction of new reloading terminals, both for land and sea freight, which increases delivery cost-effectiveness.
3. Combining different modes of transport enables goods to travel across very long European and global routes.
4. Standardized container sizes eliminate the need for reloading or changing the form of cargo during transit, improving delivery punctuality.
5. The most notable advantage is its environmental benefit. Organizing intermodal transport allows routes to be planned so that CO2 emissions are minimized. Studies show that with proper optimization, energy consumption can be up to 70% lower compared to road transport alone. This makes it a truly eco-friendly choice!
