What is long-length transport?
The general definition of long-length cargo primarily includes various types of sawn timber, rods, concrete prefabricates, aluminum prefabricates, steel profiles, and long metal sheets. However, the term also includes other oversized elements – such as round construction timber with a minimum length of 6 meters. Interestingly, this last type of cargo was once synonymous with the term “long-length“.
It is the non-standard dimensions that are crucial when planning transport.
It is essential to comply with appropriate regulations. These include important cargo transport standards published in the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure on January 24, 2018. These laws describe, for example, how long-length cargo must be secured. They require the use of top-over lashings and straight lashings during securing.
The regulation lists four approved methods for securing loads:
- local or full blocking,
- locking,
- straight lashings,
- top-over lashings.
Importantly, the law clearly requires freight forwarders to apply at least one of these methods.
Types of long-length cargo
The most frequently transported long-length cargo by iCaro Logistics includes:
various types of metals,- oversized construction materials,
- timber for summer houses and garden sheds,
- logs,
- construction wood,
- industrial goods,
- gutters, pipes,
- PVC materials.
Oversized and long-length goods are usually transported to wholesalers, end customers, or logistics centers. We cooperate with both Polish and international companies, and our vehicles safely and efficiently travel across Europe every day, covering hundreds of thousands of kilometers.
Planning this kind of transport is a highly responsible task. Only specially equipped trailers can be used. Smaller goods of more manageable length can be transported using standard passenger vehicles, delivery vans, or smaller trucks.
The most important factor is adjusting the entire transport to the payload capacity of the equipment used. A key role is played by the so-called GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). This depends primarily on the type of vehicle and the number of axles.
Construction materials of very large dimensions or very long logs are usually transported using tractor units. Special trailers are also used for this purpose.
Long-length transport – how does it work?
To ensure safe, efficient, and smooth delivery, many factors must be considered. The vehicle and all equipment needed for oversized long-length transport must meet rigorous standards. These include specialist transport equipment like coupling devices, but also basics like braking systems, proper lighting, and signage.
The trailer must not show delayed steering response or understeer while maneuvering through the route.
Static loads must be distributed evenly. There must be no instability of cargo during transport, as this could pose a risk not only to the load but also to other road users. That’s why the layout of long-length cargo during transport is so critical.
Given these challenges, long-length shipments should always be organized by experienced freight forwarders. When choosing a company to handle such a delivery, make sure their staff is properly trained and follows all necessary rules and standards. Only then can you be certain your cargo will be delivered safely and on time.
