Oversized transport
Oversized transport refers to the carriage of loads that exceed permissible dimensions. It is also referred to as over-norm, non-standard, large-size or heavy-load transport. An oversized load is one whose width exceeds 2.5 m, length is greater than 16.5 m, and height exceeds 4 m. Additionally, cargo weighing more than 42 tons is also considered over-norm.
Oversized transport with iCaro
At iCaro Logistics, we have the necessary knowledge and experience, which allows us to transport even the most complex oversized loads without difficulty. The many years of experience of our freight forwarders and the number of oversized loads transported form the foundation for the safety and proper organisation of large-size shipments in compliance with all legal standards.
When organising oversized transport, it is important to pay attention to many details, from selecting the right trailer to carefully analysing the route, taking into account all obstacles along the way. It is often necessary to arrange permits and escort vehicles (one or two). At iCaro Logistics, we provide comprehensive service for oversized cargo orders, giving you peace of mind and safety!
Oversized cargo — how to define it?
An oversized load is one that exceeds the following guidelines:
♦ load or vehicle width exceeds 2.5 metres,
♦ trailer length exceeds 16.5 metres,
♦ semi-trailer length exceeds 18.5 metres,
♦ height is greater than 4 metres,
♦ weight exceeds 42 tons.
Oversized transport can also be classified according to the required category of permits, depending on the load’s dimensions. The largest loads often require a road survey for the planned route.
In addition, oversized cargo can be divided into those that do not require escort and those that require one or two escort vehicles.
When is escort required?
Some loads, in addition to permits, also require escort by one or two escort vehicles. Below you will find information on when and how many escorts your load needs. The information below applies to transport within Poland.
If the load exceeds the following dimensions, one escort vehicle is required:
♦ load width exceeds 3.2 metres,
♦ load length exceeds 23 metres,
♦ overall height of the set including the load exceeds 4.5 metres,
♦ total weight of the set exceeds 60 tons.
If the load exceeds the following dimensions, two escort vehicles are required:
♦ load width exceeds 3.6 metres,
♦ load length exceeds 30 metres,
♦ overall height of the set including the load exceeds 4.7 metres,
♦ total weight of the set exceeds 80 tons.
An escort vehicle with a GVW up to 3.5 t should be equipped with two yellow flashing lights, an escort vehicle signboard, a wireless communication system and a loudspeaker device.
Oversized transport — goods transported
The most commonly transported oversized loads include:
♦ tanks and silos,
♦ industrial machinery,
♦ construction cranes,
♦ wind turbine components,
♦ hoists,
♦ transformers,
♦ large vehicles,
♦ boats, yachts,
♦ metal structures.
Oversized transport is carried out using specialised vehicles. We most often use trailers such as semi, tiefbett, platform and extendable trailers for the transport of the longest elements. The large availability of all types of trailers allows us to efficiently organise the transport of even the largest loads.
Oversized loads – route planning
Oversized transport requires precise planning to ensure safety and compliance with applicable regulations. At iCaro, as experts in this field, we help our clients through every stage of transporting loads with non-standard dimensions and weight, ensuring an optimal route that meets all legal and logistical requirements.
Before starting to plan the route, it is crucial to determine the exact dimensions and weight of the cargo. Based on this, we can select the appropriate vehicle and determine which roads are available for oversized transport. The size of the load can affect the choice of route, as well as the need to obtain special permits. Not every road is suitable for transporting large-size loads. Factors such as bridge width and load capacity, tunnel height, and narrow passages, bends or intersections must be considered.
Every oversized transport requires obtaining the appropriate permits from local road authorities. It is often also necessary to organise a police escort, especially for exceptionally large loads. iCaro handles all formalities related to obtaining the necessary permits, ensuring smooth and hassle-free execution of the entire operation.
Route planning is a dynamic process. During transport, unforeseen circumstances may arise, such as road closures or changes in traffic organisation.
Which roads can be used for oversized transport?
Transporting oversized loads involves following specific rules regarding which roads can be used. Depending on the size, weight and specifics of the cargo, transport can take place on both national and local roads.
Oversized transport on national roads and motorways
- National roads and motorways are the most commonly chosen routes for oversized transport. Thanks to their high technical standards, they allow for efficient and safe transport of large and heavy loads. However, it is crucial to check the height and width restrictions on the chosen route in advance.
Oversized transport on regional roads
- Oversized transport on regional roads is possible but requires detailed planning. Due to frequent passages through built-up areas, additional restrictions may apply. Before selecting the route, it is worth ensuring that road width and bridge load capacity allow for safe passage.
Local and county roads in oversized transport
- Local and county roads most often constitute the final stage of transport, leading the load directly to its destination. However, their technical condition can vary, requiring careful analysis before the journey. If necessary, additional permits or road escort arrangements may be required.
Transporting oversized loads requires precise route planning and compliance with road regulations, ensuring safety for both the transport and other road users.
Oversized transport — price
The cost of oversized transport is usually higher than that of standard transport, due to the need to meet numerous formal requirements. Organising this type of transport requires obtaining the necessary permits, route planning, and often also pilot escort. The final price is also influenced by the scale of the operation – in some cases it is necessary to coordinate the work of many people and use specialised equipment.
